This is a handy fiction we are seeing more and more of. A system makes a decision about a human being, things go sideways, and suddenly everyone is pointing fingers.
Our weekly Social Saturday events are always a rapid knowledge transfer—this one helped us refine our approach to ethical discernment with AI.
"AI doesn’t fail ethically on its own. It fails when humans stop paying attention." — Dorrian Wilson
Dorrian Wilson reminded us that AI doesn't discover truth—it operationalizes human priorities. If the system is biased, it’s because it learned what the organization values (whether that's speed, profit, or just "efficiency").
Then Tina Austin shifted the lens to how we actually learn, challenging us to "grade the thinking, not the output." Because when we stop interrogation, we aren't the expert in the loop we aspire to be.
"Failure is data for learning." — Tina Austin
The truth is that leadership is lacking AI acumen.
To help you navigate these shifts, here is Dorrian’s framework for any AI tool you bring into your workflow:
Follow the decision, not the tool. If a system influences an outcome, that is where the scrutiny belongs.
Ask what is being optimized. Is it speed? Cost? Control? The answer tells you more than any demo ever will.
Pay attention to who disappears. If certain people are always filtered out, flagged, or ignored—it isn’t random.
Demand ownership, not vibes. If no one can clearly own the outcome, the system is running the leader.
I am so deeply grateful to Dorrian Wilson and Tina Austin for pouring their brilliance and expertise into our community. We are safer and smarter because of your proximity.
If AI governance lights you up, and you'd like to learn and share with other women who are engaged in governance/policy/security, etc, check out our inaugural Community of Practice. It's is a small group of AI leaders working together for three months to expand their expertise.
We launch in March - complete your application by February 15. To learn about this program (free to members of the She Leads AI Society):
We’re talking digital clutter, daily routines, life hacks, second brains, maybe some woo, and life admin. Come connect, swap ideas, and explore how generative AI can lighten the mental load in everyday life.
Women in AI, you're invited to give a lightning talk! Got a tip, tool, or AI use case that’s totally working for you? We want to know everything.
