Where Does Learning Happen? AI? Your soul?

Hi Reader,

As we rethink everything, let's just go ahead and rethink how we think.

Several women in the She Leads AI community are digging deep into this topic. If you don't follow Vanessa Chang aka Think with V, we highly recommend. Beth Lyons' work on overwhelm and AI. And Devika Toprani brought her cognitive research and recommendations to us at Social Saturday on May 2. (Thank you, Devika!)

Devika made a strong argument for intentional pre-work before getting into it with AI. She opened with a story about her five-year-old self struggling to learn learn math from a textbook — so she took crayons and drew the formulas out. She knew there were a better way - her own way, using her own agency - even then.

Attempt, Map, Refine is Devika's process for arriving at a prompt with a plan.

Attempt: Start messy. Write down at least three things you already know, believe, or have observed about the topic. Don't worry about whether it's correct.

Map: Complete this sentence: Item A connects with Item B because......as you form you own unique idea map before bringing AI into it.

Refine: What is the gap between what you know and what you don't? Ask about that gap rather than asking a general question.

The output you get will be more precise. More importantly, you'll be equipped to evaluate it.

The companion guide has the framework and every prompt from Saturday.

The tools are supposed to even the odds. For women and underrepresented workers, they’re reinforcing the same biases in new packaging.

Susi O’Neill leads EVA Digital, helping teams communicate clearly about technology and inclusion in AI. She hosts the Insight Story podcast and writes Rethinking the Hype Cycle — and she was recognized among the top 50 women shaping content strategy.

This Social Saturday, Susi is laying out 8 adoption gaps — the specific places where AI is leaving people behind — and what leaders and practitioners can do to close them.

Come away with:

-The 8 adoption gaps mapped out and why they exist

-Practical steps your team can take to close them

This week's piece comes from Andrea Tomasoni. Andrea is an Italian visual artist working with generative AI to explore photography and cinematic storytelling. Largely self-taught, she approaches AI not as a tool but as a medium requiring intention and authorship — building structured prompts and carefully controlling light, texture, and perspective to create images that feel believable yet subtly unsettling. Her work moves between reality and imagination, developing a personal visual language where hyper-realistic photographic credibility meets the quietly impossible.

How AI is Changing Design Thinking, with Sumin Chou

video preview

Sumin Chou has spent 25+ years shaping digital products for some of the most recognizable names in media and retail — The New York Times, Neiman Marcus, CBS Interactive. Now, as Managing Partner at Schema, he's asking a question that every designer and product leader needs to sit with: when AI handles execution, what does human design judgment actually do?

In this episode, Kyle Shannon and Anne Murphy talk with Sumin about where design thinking holds its ground, what organizations consistently get wrong about AI and UX, and how to build a practice that keeps strategy — not tools — at the center.

If you work in design, lead teams who do, or are trying to make sense of what responsible AI interfaces even look like, this one is worth your full attention.
