Roads and Commodes—or Broadband and AI?
Infrastructure used to mean “roads and commodes.” I first heard that phrase in my twenties, taking minutes for a small city council in New Hampshire. It was simple, practical, and true: infrastructure is the foundation of daily life.
​
But today, the old definition doesn’t fit. If childcare makes it possible for families to work, it’s infrastructure. If rural families can’t connect because broadband skips their town, that’s an infrastructure failure. And if AI is shaping everything from jobs to elections, then building it safely and equitably is as critical as any bridge or water line.
​
Here’s the harder truth: even something as basic as infrastructure has become politicized. We’ve lost common ground on what society needs to function.
​
That’s why I talk about Parallel Infrastructure—building new systems beside the broken ones. Refusing to wait for permission. Refusing to rebuild on yesterday’s foundation.
​
Because what got us here won’t get us there.
