We Use AI and AI Uses Us: Five Actions We Can All Take
by Karen Smiley
As we’ve covered over the past few weeks, there are risks and ethical concerns around AI and data, along with powerful benefits. Here are five practical, concrete actions we can take to protect our families and businesses from AI risks without losing the benefits of AI.
Action 1. Choose Your AI Tools Wisely
Find out what AI tools are being used in your workplaces, in schools you or your family attend, or places where you shop or receive services. (Be especially alert for edtech tools used in classrooms and ambient medical scribes.) Find out if your tool providers use an AI platform under the hood that might use your data. Do some homework on the AI tool providers & how they handle biases & confidentiality. Certifications aren’t perfect, but they may help you make better decisions.

These five actions and much more are covered in my upcoming book, “Everyday Ethical AI: A Guide For Families & Small Businesses”. To learn more about these actions and automatically get fresh weekly articles and news about everyday ethical AI, subscribe here.
